World Cup 2022: Luis Suarez declares FIFA is always against Uruguay despite Ghana victory

Published on: 06 December 2022

Luis Suarez launches scathing attack on FIFA after Edinson Cavani was denied a late penalty after the striker went over in the Ghana 18-yard box.

The former Liverpool and Barcelona striker felt that was a reasonable claim and he also considered Uruguay should have had a spot-kick early in the second half after Darwin Nunez went down.

Ghana skipper Andre Ayew missed a penalty in the 21st minute as his kick was saved by Uruguay goalkeeper Sergio Rochet following a foul on Mohammed Kudus. Uruguay went on to win the game 2-0 thanks to goals from Giorgio de Arrascaeta in the 26th and 32nd minutes of the game but it was not enough as teams went out of the tournament.

"The penalty against Darwin is very clear. Edi's also has contact," Suarez said.

"They are not excuses but incredible things are taking place in the World Cup."

He added, "After the game I want to go hug my family, and people from FIFA come to tell me no when you see a Frenchman with his children on the substitute bench.

"It seems that Uruguay has to have more power. FIFA is always against Uruguay."
