World Cup 2022: Past recognized moment at tournament - Luis Suarez handball against Ghana

Published on: 23 November 2022

One of the most memorable moments at the Mundial was the handball against Ghana by Uruguay striker Luis Suarez.

The ball was on its way to an open net. Without a doubt, that was going to be a goal for Ghana. And not just any objective. This one, in the last minute of extra time in their 2010 quarterfinal against Uruguay, would make the Black Stars the first African team to reach a World Cup semifinal, much alone one on South African soil.

Luis Suarez, a forward for Uruguay, had to make a choice as he was on the goal line. His decision will abruptly halt Ghana's progress. Suarez hit the ball out of the air with his hands knowing full well that he would be sent off.

Suarez calculated in a split second that the only chance his team had of remaining in the game was to avoid giving up the goal at all costs, even if that meant sacrificing himself and forcing Ghana to earn a penalty kick.

From the spot, Asamoah Gyan missed. After winning the subsequent shootout, Uruguay progressed to the semifinals.

The Black Stars of Ghana will clash with Uruguay again at the 2022 World Cup in Group H on 2nd December. The massive encounter will be played at the Al Janoub Stadium.

Ghanaians are seeking revenge against Uruguay at the Mundial in Qatar and have urged the Black Stars to focus on beating the Sky Blues.
