World Cup 2022: Portugal thrash Switzerland 6-1 to set up date with Morocco in quarter-finals

Published on: 06 December 2022

Portugal on Tuesday night made light work of Switzerland to advance to the quarter-finals stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The Portuguese today locked horns with the Swiss in one of the two Round 16 games played at the Qatar tournament today.

In a game expected to be closely contested, Switzerland failed to show up as the 2016 European champions cruised to a big win.

With Portugal dominating the game, they scored after just 17 minutes when Goncalo Ramos found the back of the net with a fine strike.

Later in the 33rd minute, veteran Pepe got his name on the score sheet to double the lead for Portugal before the lead.

After recess, Switzerland came in strong to try and recover from the poor showing in the first half.

While Manuel Akanji would net a consolation for the Swiss, two additional goals from Goncalo Ramos to complete his hat-trick took the game away from Switzerland.

Courtesy of two other goals from Raphael Guerreiro and Raphael Leao, Portugal secured a massive 6-1 win to knockout Switzerland.

Portugal will now face off with Morocco, the only remaining African side in the tournament.
