Daniel Afriyie Barnieh, an Accra Hearts of Oak midfielder has been included in Ghana's final squad for the 2022 World Cup which will be held in Qatar.
Qatar will host the World Cup from November 20 until December 18, 2022. After the tournament in South Korea and Japan in 2002, this will be the second World Cup completely hosted in Asia and the first World Cup to ever be held in the Arab world.
Furthermore, the tournament is planned to be the last with a 32-team field; for the tournament in the United States, Mexico, and Canada in 2026, the field is planned to grow to 48 teams.
Born in Ghana's Ashanti Region Daniel Afriyie Barnieh played for a number of Ashanti Region colts (juvenile) clubs. He started at Amansie FC before moving on to Celtic Academy in Kumasi, and then to Valencia Colts in 2015.
He advanced his career by joining Galaxy United in the Ghana Division Two League, where he played from 2016 to 2017. Afriyie joined Burkina Faso top flight team Rahimo FC in January 2018, where he helped the club win the Burkinabé Premier League in the 2018-19 season and qualify for the 2019-20 CAF Champions League.
He signed a three-year contract on January 15, 2020, ahead of the 2019-20 Ghana Premier League. On January 19, 2020, he made his debut in a 2-1 away win over Liberty Professionals.
He guided Ghana to victory and qualification for the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations in 2021. In the final, he energized the squad by scoring the equalizer through a free-kick from Percious Boah in the 21st minute, sparking a comeback win over Burkina Faso.
CK Akonnor called Afriyie up for the first time to the Ghana senior squad, the Black Stars, ahead of Ghana's 2022 Qatar FIFA World Cup Group G qualifications against Ethiopia and South Africa.
Daniel Afriyie Barnieh won the Ghana Premier League title with Accra Hearts of Oak in the 2020/21 season.
