World Cup 2022: Profile of Daniel Amartey

Daniel Amartey is part of Ghana’s defenders named in the final 26 man squad for the tournament which will be held in Doha, Qatar.

The 6 ft 1 in defender began his career with Ghana's second-tier club International Allies.

Daniel Amartey was scouted by Swedish coach Magnus Pehrsson he took the talented defender to Sweden to play for Djurgårdens IF.

Amartey made his Svenska Cupen debut against Umea FC on March 3, 2013. On March 31, 2013, he made his league debut against Helsingborgs IF in the 2013 Allsvenskan opener.

On May 26, 2013, he scored his first goal for the club when he headed home the 1-1 equalizer in the 2013 Svenska Cupen Final, which Djurgarden eventually lost on penalties against IFK Goteborg.

Amartey joined F.C. Copenhagen in July 2014 for a sum of €2.5 million plus add-ons, and made his Superliga debut on July 20 against Silkeborg IF.

Amartey signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with Premier League team Leicester City on January 22, 2016, for an estimated cost of up to £6 million. Amartey played five different roles as his side Leicester City won the Premier League in his debut year. On February 27, 2016, in a 1-0 home league victory over Norwich City, he made his club debut.

On December 17, 2016, Amartey scored his first goal for Leicester, rescuing a 2-2 tie with an equalizer at Stoke City.

Amartey made his under-20 national football team debut for Ghana against Nigeria in May 2012.

Amartey participated in all of Ghana's group games at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, where the Black Stars placed second.

At the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, he participated in six games, playing the full 90 minutes in each game to help Ghana place fourth.

Amartey played in the Cameroon edition of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, when the Black Stars of Ghana were eliminated early. This season Daniel Amartey has played eleven games in the Premier League for Leicester City.
