World Cup 2022: Profile of Tariq Lamptey

Tariq Lamptey is a new addition to the senior national team the Black Stars. He switched nationality to represent Ghana at the senior international level in 2022.

The Hillingdon-born defender began his career with Larkspur Rovers at the age of eight years from 2006 to 2008 before moving to Chelsea FC.

On December 29, 2019, Tariq Lamptey made his professional football debut against Arsenal in the Premier League. He came on as a 59th-minute substitute for Fikayo Tomori and was a dynamic influence as Chelsea rallied from a 1-0 deficit to win 2-1.

The 22-year-old is 165cm tall. Tariq Lamptey prefers to play with his right foot. He can play as a right back or a right midfielder.

Before switching nationality to Ghana Lamptey made three appearances for England’s U18, nine appearances for England's U19 (scored one), six appearances for U20, and two appearances for England's U21.

Lamptey signed a three-and-a-half year contract with Brighton & Hove Albion on January 31, 2020, the winter transfer deadline day. In his first Premier League start, a 0-0 away draw against Leicester City on June 23, he had an outstanding debut for the Seagulls.

On November 1, he scored his first goal for Albion in a 2-1 Premier League loss to Tottenham Hotspur. Lamptey received two yellow in the 2-1 away win over Aston Villa on November 21 and was then dismissed for the first time in his career.

His strengths are passing, and ground duels. He is one of the pacey defenders in the Premier League.

Lamptey scored his second goal for Albion, as well as Brighton's third, in a 3-1 EFL Cup third round win away at Arsenal on November 9.

Lamptey made his debut on September 23, 2022, as a 72nd-minute substitute for Denis Odoi in a 3-0 friendly loss to Brazil at the Stade Océane in Le Havre. This season Tariq Lamptey has made 11 appearances in the Premier League and two appearances in the EFL Cup.
