World Cup 2022: Roy Keane backs Cristiano Ronaldo to shine against Ghana in opener

Published on: 24 November 2022

Former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane has urged Cristiano Ronaldo to lead Portugal to victory against Ghana in their 2022 World Cup opener.

Ronaldo features in the team alongside Bruno Fernandes, after their frosty reception upon the forward's arrival to camp.

The game is currently goalless after 35 minutes played so far.

"I'm looking forward to seeing him play," Keane told ITV.

"I hope he performs, I believe he will. He'll do it on the pitch and shut a few people up... all the idiots out there who have been criticising him. Great player, [I'm] lucky to have played with him and delighted to be watching him again tonight."

Ghana are making a record 4th World Cup appearance in Qatar having previously played in the 2006, 2010 and 2014 in Germany, South Africa and Brazil respectively.

Black Stars will be hoping to progress from the group stage at this year's tournament.

Black Stars exited the group stage at the 2014 edition in Brazil after a slow start to the tournament.
