World Cup 2022: South Korea team guide and preview

Published on: 16 November 2022

South Korea will play in their 11th FIFA World Cup, hoping to get to the quarterfinals for the first time in the country's history.

Heung-min Son of Tottenham Hotspur is the most well-known player in the squad.

Despite being considered uncertain to compete in the 2017 FIFA World Cup in Qatar because of an eye problem, Son proclaimed himself fit to represent his country on Wednesday. However, the Korea Football Association eventually called him up to the team (KFA).

Other prominent names in the South Korean squad include Napoli defender Kim Min-jae, a former Fenerbahce player, Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Hwang Hee-chan, and Mallorca midfielder Lee Kang-in.

Despite initially going through five World Cup tournaments without winning a match, South Korea became the only Asian team to reach the semi-final stages when they co-hosted the 2002 tournament with Japan.

Former striker Cha Bum-kun is a notable figure in South Korean football history, as he is both the most capped player and the national team's all-time highest scorer, with 58 goals in 136 matches.

South Korea won the AFC Asian Cup twice, in 1956 and 1960.
