Uruguay defender Jose Maria Gimenez was seen in a video footage appearing to swing his elbow and hit a FIFA employee on the pitch as he went to protest to referee Daniel Siebert near the tunnel at the end of the final Group H match against Ghana.

Gimenez can be seen walking towards the referee, amidst the already-present melee of his teammates around the official, and as he approaches a person in a FIFA suit, he raises his elbow and hits him on the back of the head as he continues to walk towards the referee to protest the two penalties that were not awarded.

Uruguay defeated Ghana 2-0 but both team crashed out of the tournament.

Ghana skipper Andre Ayew missed a penalty in the 21st minute as his kick was saved by Uruguay goalkeeper Sergio Rochet following a foul on Mohammed Kudus.

Uruguay went on to win the game 2-0 thanks to goals from Giorgio de Arrascaeta in the 26th and 32nd minutes of the game but it was not enough as teams went out of the tournament.

As soon as the referee blew the final whistle, several players, including Cavani and Diego Godin, came to protest to the referee. They were then joined at full speed by Gimenez, with several people in front of him on his way to the referee.

FIFA is expected to open disciplinary proceedings to analyze the incident and determine whether or not to sanction the player.
