World Cup 2022: We're upset to lose to Morocco - Portugal coach Fernando Santos

Published on: 11 December 2022

Portugal coach Fernando Santos has admitted his side were disappointed and frustrated to lose 1-0 to Morocco in the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Striker Youssef En-Nesyri scored the winning goal in the first half, leaping highest to beat goalkeeper Diogo Costa to the ball at Al Thumama Stadium.

Cristiano Ronaldo climbed off the bench in the 50th minute to equal the men’s all-time appearance record of 196 in international matches, but he could not find the equaliser as their last-four hopes were dashed.

"I think it wasn't fair for us to lose, but that's football," said Fernando Santos.

"We're upset because we thought we could reach the final and win the final as well."

Walid Regragui's men will face holders France in the semifinals at Al Bayt Stadium on Wednesday.

Morocco had become the fourth African nation to reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup, following in the footsteps of Cameroon (1990), Senegal (2002) and Ghana (2010).
