Worry Grows as Neymar Has Now Failed to Score for Barcelona in Last 975 Minutes

Published on: 08 January 2017

Lionel Messi's last gasp free kick on Sundaymay well have stolen the headlines from the Catalan's 1-1 draw with Villareal, but there can be no doubting that it was a case of yet more dropped points for Luis Enrique's side, who now find themselves down in third place behind Sevilla and leagueleaders Real Madrid.

But as many at the Nou Camp scratch their heads at the team's indifferent form, one man is coming under particular scrutiny having now gone 11 matches without scoring.

Brazil captain Neymar has now gone a whopping 975 minutes without finding the net and to put that into context, his last goal actually came in Barcelona's 4-0 drubbing of Manchester City back in October.

Of course, even the best players go through a dip in form, but Neymar appears to have gone off the boil at the wrong time when his team are clearly in need of inspiration, as Messi continues to bravely carry Barca's misfiring season.

It should be noted that Neymar does already have a grand total of 13 assists in all competitions so far this season, but such is the fickle nature of football, his goal drought is what continues to dominate the headlines.

The 24-year-old can at least take comfort from comments made by his manager before Sunday's La Liga fixture with Villareal. Enrique made a point of backing his man in his pre-match press conference and noted that there were other aspects of Neymar's game that he was happy with.

The Barca boss said (as quoted by ESPN):"Neymar looks really good.If he's demonstrated anything in his career it's his maturity and his ability to overcome tense situations.

"He's going to score a lot of goals, for sure. We just look at the positives and Neymar's performances have provided more positives than negatives. He's having a good season."
