Yarmolenko blow for Hammers

Published on: 23 October 2018

West Ham have been hit by the news key man Andriy Yarmolenko is facing a six-month absence after undergoing Achilles surgery.

The 28-year-old Ukraine international winger, who has scored two goals in 10 games for the Hammers after joining from Borussia Dortmund in the summer, suffered the injury during Saturday's 1-0 defeat against Tottenham at the London Stadium.

Andriy's operation went well and we will now work hard to support him throughout the rehabilitation process.

And the Hammers released a statement on Monday evening to confirm the severity of the injury, before confirming that Yarmolenko has "has undergone successful surgery to repair a damaged Achilles tendon".

West Ham's head of medical services Richard Collinge added on the club's website: "Andriy's operation went well and we will now work hard to support him throughout the rehabilitation process.

"His recovery will be planned very carefully and we have every confidence that he will return to full fitness within the scheduled timeframe."

Despite there being no mention of when Yarmolenko could return to action, an Achilles injury usually takes around six months to recover from so he is likely to return for the final month of the Premier League season.

Manuel Pellegrini's side travel to Leicester on Saturday evening in their first game without Yarmolenko and they are 5/2 to pick up a win. The Foxes are priced at 11/10 and the draw is 23/10.
