Christopher Katongo, the captain of the victorious Zambian team in the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), has hailed retired Ghanaian striker Asamoah Gyan as a football legend and an iconic figure.

Reflecting on their encounter in the AFCON, Katongo acknowledged Gyan's significant contributions to the Ghanaian national team.

In the semi-final match between Zambia and Ghana, Gyan, a former player for the Ghana Black Stars, unfortunately missed a crucial penalty.

This misfortune ultimately led to Zambia's advancement to the final, where they secured a memorable 1-0 victory over their star-studded Ghanaian counterparts.

Despite the intensity of their past rivalry, Katongo expressed his utmost respect for Gyan and his accomplishments on the football field.

As Katongo currently serves as a member of the technical bench for the Zambia Under-23 team, he extended his best wishes to Gyan, emphasizing that his admiration and support for the Ghanaian striker extend beyond the confines of the game.

“I celebrate you brother. I know that you know the football journey continues off the pitch,” Katongo said, as quoted by zambiaobserver.com.

“Wishing you the best in your next chapter of your life away from active football Asamoah Gyan.”
