Mensah replaced Baba Rahman in coach Kwesi Appiah's 23-man squad and was handed a starting berth in the Afcon qualifier against South Africa on Thursday.

Despite coming up against Percy Tau, the 21-year-old was difficult to pass and kept him quite in the entire game.

Gideon, who is also member of the Black Meteors team revealed his desire to maintain his first team spot in the Black Stars.

"Yes, for sure I would like to stay in the team, but it’s the decision of the coach," he told footballmadeinghana.com.

"But for me and from what I delivered today I’m here to stay," he said.

"I’m not going to relax because of my performance against South Africa. I will keep my head up and keep working hard for the team."
