Toby Alderweireld: Tottenham Can Beat Anyone in the Champions League

Published on: 24 August 2016

Toby Alderweireld has revealed that his Tottenham teammates are confident ahead of the Champions League draw on Thursday, believing that they can win every game in the competition.

Quoted in the Daily Mail, the Spurs defender believes Mauricio Pochettino's young guns can take on Europe's most potent sides after their third place finish last season secured their place amongst the continent's elite.

The north London side last qualified for Champions League football under Harry Redknapp in 2010-2011 where they faced the likes of Inter, AC Milan and Real Madrid as they reached the quarter finals of the competition.

With such a youthful squad, Alderweireld is a rare breed at White Hart Lane as one of the few members of the squad to have experienced Champions League football.

His time with Ajax and later Atletico Madrid, where he almost tasted glory in the competition before losing to neighbours Real Madrid has allowed Alderweireld to speak positively about Spurs' chances.

"We're looking forward to it. We're very excited to play in the Champions League and I think it will be the next step for the young team we have," explained the defender.

"I think after training we'll watch the draw together, like every draw - the Europa League before and now the Champions League," he added.

The 27-year-old is fully acceptant that his side will face a number of tests throughout the campaign and after being drawn in pot three, could be placed in a group of death.

"Pot one is only the best teams so obviously we're going to draw at least one good team - and in the Champions League they're all good teams so it will be fun and good to show ourselves and to compare ourselves with the big teams."

Alderweireld also believes that Wembley will play a huge part in the club's success in the competition. Pochettino's men will play their home ties at the national stadium whilst development work is carried out on White Hart Lane.

"We don't have to look too far in the future, we have to see game by game. It will be a very good experience for everybody, to play at Wembley as well with the fans behind us.

'We can go through and you have to believe that we can win every game."
