Vincente del Bosque has stepped down as Spain coach following their last 16 defeat to Italy in Euro 2016, bringing an end to eight years in charge.

Del Bosque, who led Spain to back-to-back European Championships in 2008 and 2012, either side of a firstWorld Cup win in 2010, left his post after meeting with Spanish FA president Angel Maria Villar to tender his resignation, according toThe Mirror.

Despite his three titles as coach of La Furia Roja, the 65-year-old couldn't defend his World Cup or European Championships, with Spain crashing out of the group stages at the 2014 World Cup and losing 2-0 to Italy to bring their tournament in France to an early end.

A statement from the Spanish FA read:"The RFEF president, Angel Maria Villar and the national team coach, Vicente del Bosque, today had a meeting in Madrid, in which the coach expressed his desire to stand down from his role.

"Villar considers Del Bosque to be an icon of Spanish football and offered him the chance to continue working with the federation, which was accepted.

"The offer will be firmed up in the weeks ahead."

The search for the former Real Madrid coach's successor has ledtoJoaquin Caparros who has emerged as an early contender for the job despite his chequered success in Spain.

Asked by publicationAS about being Spain's new coach, Caparros said: "If the Federation need me, I'll happily step forward.

I don't know whether they will call but Villar already knows that I am fully at the Federation's disposal."
