2022 FIFA WCQ: Three key things we learned from Nigeria v Ghana

Published on: 29 March 2022

Ghana put on a fight in the FIFA World cup qualifiers to record a 1-1 draw which sent the team through to Qatar against favourites Nigeria at the Moshood Abiola Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Here are the three things we learned from this game.

We could not hold the ball for long

During the encounter, the Black Stars could not hold the ball for long periods to launch attacks. This showed in the team's possession stats against the Nigerians. The team's midfield in Abuja was run over by the strong and pacey Nigerian midfielders throughout the encounter at the Moshood Abiola Stadium.

Felix Afena-Gyan is one for the future

The AS Roma youngster made his debut on Friday evening in the first leg. He kept his place in the second leg coming up against Nigeria's experience defenders Leon Balogun and Troost-Ekong. Gyan was given a great task to leading the line against Nigeria. He did impress despite not scoring.

Our creativity is lacking

When Black Stars get the ball they fail to launch good counter-attacks. As the game continued, the final pass to the attackers was also absent. Ghana most often did not know how to open up the star studded Nigerian side. This increased the pressure on the team.
