2022 World Cup playoffs: Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey to captain Black Stars against Nigeria

Published on: 21 March 2022

Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey is set to captain Black Stars for the upcoming final play-offs of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Nigeria later this month.

Andre Ayew won't be available for the crucial qualifier following his red card in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

The skipper was sent off in the Black Stars' last group game where they lost to debutants Comoros 3-2 to exit the competition.

He has been suspended for the next two competitive matches which automatically rules him out of the two-legged tie.

Partey has hit top ahead of the qualifiers. He was named Arsenal Player of the Month for February for the very first time

He also put up an incredible performance for the Gunners in their 2-0 win over Leicester City in the Premier League at the Emirates stadium.

The former Atletico Madrid has made 34 appearances for Black Stars and scored 12 goals in the process.

Black Stars will host Nigeria in the first leg of the play-offs, before travelling to Abuja for the return leg on March 29, 2022, at the Moshood Abiola Stadium.

The winner of the tie will represent the continent at the World football showpiece which is scheduled to take place from November 21 to December

The Super Eagles are seeking to qualify for the global showpiece a 7th time and, since 1994, have missed only one of seven editions. The last of three appearances by Ghana was in 2014.

This upcoming encounter is one that will be keenly watched by football fans in Accra and Abuja because of the known rivalry between the two countries.
