2023/24 Ghana Premier League: Heart of Lions draw at Berekum Chelsea to survive relegation

Published on: 16 June 2024

Heart of Lions have survived Ghana Premier League relegation after pulling up a 2-2 draw against Berekum Chelsea on the final day of the season.

The draw means Heart of Lions finish 13th on the table with 45 points, magically working their way out of relegation after failing to win a game more than ten games into the season.

But the home side had no troubles with relegation as their status for next season was already secured.

Stephen Amankona scored the opening goal after 12 minutes into the game, giving them a 1-0 lead.

With a minute to the end of the first half, Amankona again scored to double the lead for Berekum Chelsea.

The drama then began to unfold as Heart of Lions scored two penalties to seal the draw. Ebenezer Abban scored the first in the 55th minute before adding the equaliser in stoppage time.

The second penalty was particularly controversial as there was no contact on the player.
