2023 AFCON qualifiers: Ghana coach Chris Hughton snubs home-based players again despite GPL monitoring

Ghana coach Chris Hughton has snubbed home-based players in his latest call up for the upcoming AFCON 2023 qualifiers despite his Ghana Premier League monitoring.

Hughton has been present in several match venues to monitor local players for future call-ups as he promised in his first engagement with the media as Black Stars coach.

At the weekend, he watched Aduana Stars game against Dreams FC before traveling to Kumasi with his assistant, Didi Dramani to monitor Kotoko and Karela United on Monday.

Whiles Hughton was monitoring GPL games, his assistant developed an interest in the lower leagues, watching some Division One games.

Despite watching several games in domestically, none of the players made the cut for the upcoming qualifiers against Madagascar.

Their performance seems to have not met the requirement of the Chris Hughton led technical team who has handed call-ups to a set of foreign-based players including youngster Ernest Nuamah who has been in explosive form in the Danish Super League with FC Nordjaelland.

The Black Stars will face Madagascar in the fifth round of the qualifiers on June 18 at the Stade Kianja Berea in Antananarivo.

Ghana currently sit atop Group E in the AFCON qualifiers, amassing 8 points. Their journey thus far has seen them secure victories in two matches against Madagascar and Angola, while also earning draws against Central African Republic and Angola in the initial four fixtures.

Following the Madagascar clash, the Black Stars will conclude their qualifiers with a final home game against the Central African Republic in September.

Excitement continues to build as Ghana aim to maintain its impressive form and secure qualification to next year’s tournament in Ivory Coast.
