2023 Africa Cup of Nations: Thomas Partey missing tournament a matter of common sense - Mikel Arteta

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta says Black Stars deputy captain Thomas Partey missing the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations was a matter of common sense.

The Spanish coach reveals that the former Atletico Madrid midfielder wanted to be with the Black Stars at the 2023 AFCON, but he explains that his rehab is best when it follows. There was a reason for him to be excluded from the squad.

Partey, who recently resumed workouts after a two-month thigh injury layoff, generated anticipation for his return to the national squad with a viral video.

Despite this, Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton excluded him from the 27-man squad, a decision Arteta supports, citing the need for sensible consideration.

“It was about common sense. He has a long-term injury and he really wanted to push his rehab. He really wanted to be with the national team but he is still far from training with the team and it didn’t make a lot of sense for him to be involved.”

Ghana is set to open their group stage campaign against Cape Verde on Sunday, January 14, 2024.

The Black Stars will then play against record champions Egypt in their second group match against Egypt in four days before wrapping up the group face against Mozambique on January 22.
