2023 U-23 AFCON: ‘Some Black Meteors players think they are bigger than the whole team’ - Asamoah Gyan fires

Asamoah Gyan, former Black Stars captain, has expressed his disappointment with some members of the Black Meteors team following their shocking exit from the 2023 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Black Meteors were eliminated from the competition, which serves as qualifiers for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, after drawing 1-1 in their final group game against Guinea on Friday, June 30 at the Grand Stade of Tangier.

Ghana finished the group stages in third place with four points, behind Morocco by five points and behind Guinea on goal difference.

In a post on Twitter, Asamoah Gyan criticized certain players for their attitude, suggesting that they believed they were bigger than the team.

“What I saw in this Black Meteors team is some players think they are bigger than the whole team. Small hype and fame? SMH," read Gyan's tweet.

He also emphasized the importance of teamwork and highlighted the need for players to contribute both on and off the ball.

“Modern football is not only about what you do with the ball. It’s about what you do without the ball. I see players thinking they can play alone. It’s about time we wake up and defend when we lose the ball. SMH," Gyan added.

Ghana's failure to progress from the group stages means that the team will not be participating in next year's Olympic Games in Paris. The West African nation has not featured in the Olympic Games since 2004 in Athens, Greece.

Asamoah Gyan, who recently announced his retirement from football, was a member of the team that represented Ghana in Greece.
