Ghana captain, Andre Ayew has admitted that a lot rests on him to ensure the senior national team, the Black Stars end the Africa Cup of Nations [Afcon] trophy drought.
The West African country have gone 39 years without an AFCON trophy with the last coming in Libya 1982.
Ghana has appeared in the semi-finals four times in the last five editions of the Africa Cup of Nations but missed out on the trophy in all four appearances.
Ghana made the finals of the continental showpiece in 1992, 2010 and the 2015 editions but failed to win the ultimate.
The four-time Afcon holders have already booked a place in the 2021 Afcon to be staged in Cameroon next year and Andre Ayew knows the responsibilities that come with it.
“I can’t hide behind the fact that the nation and my colleagues, the Ghana football fans have a lot of hopes in me and believe a lot in me to do something to make sure we qualify for the World Cup and try and bring a trophy home," he told Joy Sports.
“I can’t hide from that so I’m taking it with a lot of humbleness and a lot of responsibilities but I believe that I have grown enough in the game to take that weight and I’m gonna keep working hard and make sure that I make the nation proud," he added.
The Black Stars confirmed their 2021 Afcon qualification after a 1-1 draw against South Africa at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The stars made light work of São Tomé with a 3-1 scoreline to top Group C with 13 points.
Ghana has won the Afcon four times in 1963, 1965, 1972 and the last being the 1982 edition.
