Adler dismisses relegation fears

Rene Adler has hit back at the critics who have suggested after Hamburg's 1-0 defeat to Nurnberg that the club is set for a relegation battle this season.

The goalkeeper, who moved to Hamburg from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer, played in the 1-0 Bundesliga loss to Nurnberg that came on the back of the club's shock first-round DFB-Pokal defeat to Karlsruhe.

It is only the first game of the league season and it is too soon to start talking about a relegation battle.

Hamburg are the only club to have been in the top-flight of German football since the Bundesliga's inception 50 years ago and Adler is convinced the club will not be relegated this term.

He said after the Nurnberg setback: "It is only the first game of the league season and it is too soon to start talking about a relegation battle already.

"There is only one thing to do and that is to stop watching television and reading the newspapers."

Coach Thorsten Fink initially led Hamburg away from the relegation zone following his arrival from Basel last October only for the club to later slide back down the table and only just avoid the drop.

Meanwhile, Hamburg are set to be boosted by the imminent arrival of Petr Kiracek from Wolfsburg.

Bayern Munich are 1/2000 to win the Bundesliga title this season while Borussia Dortmund are 100/1 to finish top once again.
