AFCON 2019: Black Stars captain Andre Ayew issue apology to Ghanaians after exiting tourney

Published on: 09 July 2019

Captain for the Black Stars of Ghana, Andre Dede Ayew has apologized on behalf of the team following their disappointing exit from the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

Ghana was stunned by Tunisia on Monday in the last round of 16 match played at the Ismailia Stadium. A one-all result at the end of 90 minutes plus extra time pushed the match into penalties where the Carthage Eagles reigned supreme.

A good team goal completed by attacker Taha Khenissi on the 73rd minute was canceled in the dying minute of the match courtesy an own goal from Rami Bedoui to force the match into extra time.

Ghana’s Caleb Ekuban failed to convert his kick in the shootout as Tunisia score all five of theirs to progress into the quarter-finals.

Speaking in a post-match interview, Andre Dede Ayew apologized for letting the country down following their elimination at the round of 16 stage.

He further indicated that Ghana played a good game but will not complain because that is football and anything can happen. He however insists that they will learn from their mistake and get back stronger the next time.

“Ghana has played a good game and this is football and we have to learn from the mistakes”. The Ghana captain told Time Sport.
