Ailing Wolves bring back Jonker

Published on: 06 November 2018

Former assistant manager Andries Jonker has been named as the new man in charge of Wolfsburg, following the axing of Valerien Ismael.

The 54-year-old Dutchman has ended a three-year spell as academy director at Arsenal to return to Germany, having previously worked as the number two at both Bayern Munich and Wolfsburg.

He is an internationally experienced coach and an expert tactician.

Olaf Rebbe

Wolves sporting director Olaf Rebbe told the club's official website: "Andries knows Wolfsburg well and maintained regular contact with the club even after his move to London.

"Both factors were vital in us achieving this solution so quickly. He is an internationally experienced coach and an expert tactician, who provides the best possible requirements to get us back on track quickly."

Rebbe had earlier said of the decision to axe Ismael: "Having considered all the facts and circumstances, we came to the mutual conclusion that a parting of ways was the correct measure in order to get the team back on track.

"Our decision was not based solely on the most recent result of the game against Werder Bremen, but rather based upon the impressions and results from recent weeks and months."

Die Wolfe are currently down in 14th place in the Bundesliga standings, just two points clear of the relegation places, having started the season with Dieter Hecking in charge, before Ismael took over in mid-October.

They have lost four of their last five league games, with a 2-1 home loss to fellow strugglers Werder Bremen proving to be the final game in charge for Ismael.

Wolfsburg are priced at 9/2 to be relegated this season, with Bremen available at 10000/1 and Hamburg, who were humiliated 8-0 by Bayern Munich at the weekend, 2/1.
