Bayern Munich throttled Mainz to move to second in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Carlo Ancelotti praised Bayern Munich's performance as the German champions returned to winning ways in the Bundesliga with a comfortable 4-0 win over Mainz.

After suffering a timid 2-0 loss in Hoffenheim last Saturday -- their earliest defeat in a season since 2011 - Bayern bounced back on the day Oktoberfest celebrations got underway in Munich.

Thomas Muller and Arjen Robben bagged their first league goals of the season in the first half, before top scorer Robert Lewandowski, on his 100th Bundesliga appearance for the club, added two second-half goals to crown a convincing win.

Speaking at the post match news conference, Ancelotti said: "We played well with good intensity and were able to kill the game off. The movement of our four attacking players was good, they combined well.

"Of course, when we missed two or three chances when we were leading 1-0 the game could have become more complicated, but after we scored the second goal, we continued to play and press.

"We were well-organised in behind [defence] and didn't concede any opportunities apart from two or three situations where our passing was not so clean. After that it was important for us to move well up front, if we move better up front we can play more vertical and be more dangerous."

Following his 97th goal and assist for the club, Muller told Sky after the game: "Of course we had set our stall out to play well and make a statement of intent. Today our body language was 100 percent right. We have to try and take this momentum into our next games."

Two-goal Lewandowski echoed Muller's sentiment: "When we are as flexible as this on the pitch, then it's difficult for any opponent to stop us," he said.

Bayern moved up to second with the win and travel to play third-placed Schalke on Tuesday in Gelsenkirchen.
