Ander Herrera Praises Man Utd's Attacking Stars After Grinding Out Crystal Palace Win

Published on: 15 December 2016

Ander Herrera has hailed some of his fellow Manchester United stars for their matchwinning ability - even when they don't necessarily play well.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba were on hand to fire the Red Devils to a crucial 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace on Wednesday despite not being at their best, while other first-team players such as Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial have also notably struggled this term.

Despite not maintaining consistently good form throughout the first six months of 2016/17, however, Herrera said he believes his fellow squad members' qualities on the pitch mean that they don't need to play well for the entire 90 minutes if they come up with the goods to secure wins for Jose Mourinho's side.

He told the Daily Mail: "When you have top players, they can do that (win a game). They don't need to play their best game to change it.

"That is where we have Paul, Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata, Anthony Martial, Ibrahimovic, top players who can change the game even when they are not playing their best.

"That is fantastic for us, but I want to speak about our spirit, we controlled the game on a day when we didn't play our best and that is important for us. In a long season like this, when you win not on your best day it is very important, it is the history of this club."

Herrera has begun to form a promising partnership alongside Pogba and Michael Carrick in midfield in recent weeks for United, with Carrick's ball playing ability complementing the Spain international's bustling displays and Pogba's box-to-box qualities.

Picking out the world's most expensive footballer in particular, Herrera claimed that the France international's ability to perform the unexpected made him a one-in-a-million type player as he refused to compare his club team mate to past United stars.

He continued: "Pogba is Pogba and other midfielders are different.

"We know Paul can change a game in one second. He has an unbelievable shot, he can head the ball, he can combine near the box and create something.

"I don't like to compare, I just say that Paul is a top player and can change a game in one second but we are lucky because we don't only have Paul who can do that."

Herrera also reserved special praise for United manager Mourinho, who has come in for criticism from some areas of the press for his over-exuberant touchline antics this season.

The 26-year-old maintained that the Portuguese boss' passion was part of his character, and added that it was Mourinho's fiery personality that is helping United turn their season around.

He said: "You saw him (celebrate on the pitch at the end of the game). Even more in the dressing room, he is so passionate and thinks the same as us - that we deserve to have more points and that is why he was so happy today.

"We are so happy because we showed our spirit, this was not our best game but even on a day where we didn't play our best game we created six or seven chances."
