Turkish Fenerbahçe club midfielder André Ayew was chosen by coach Kwasi Appiah on Friday to succeed Ghanaian captain Asamoah Gyan after his surprise defection on Monday. Gyan, 33 years and 106 caps, had announced his decision to retire internationally to protest the coach's intention not to appoint him captain at the CAN which begins June 21 in Egypt. The top scorer for the Ghana team (51 goals) has since reversed his decision on Wednesday, on "presidential request.""Gyan has been elevated to the rank of captain general," said the Ghanaian Football Federation on its website. Ayew, the new captain of the Black Stars of Ghana, aged 30, is the son of Abedi Pelé, the former star of Olympique de Marseille. He wore the national team jersey for the first time in 2008 at the age of 18. In 2009, he was the captain of the U20 team from Ghana, crowned world champion. Inter Milan midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah has been named vice-captain of Ghana. At CAN, the Black Stars of Ghana are in group F with Cameroon, the title holder, Benin and Guinea-Bissau.
