Arsenal Among European Giants Linked With Atletico Madrid Star Yannick Carrasco

Published on: 07 February 2017

Arsenal are one of several big name European clubs currently being linked with interest in rising Atletico Madrid winger Yannick Carrasco, a player who scored Atleti's equalising goal in last season's Champions League final and is widely seen as one of the hottest talents around.

According to The Sun, the Gunners will face stiff competition from the likes of Premier League rivals Chelsea, as well as Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich should they choose to actively pursue the 23-year-old Belgian international.

Carrasco, who actually scored against Arsenal in the Champions League during his Monaco days, is apparently unsettled at Atletico. His performances have noticeably dipped since November and a falling out with manager Diego Simeone is believed to have occurred.

Carrasco only signed a bumper new Atletico contract in October. That deal more than doubled the player's previous salary to around €86k-per-week and runs until 2022. It also includes a sizeable €100m release clause - the same as Antoine Griezmann.

But while Manchester United will likely have to trigger the clause and pay close to a world record fee in their efforts to land Griezmann, The Sun's report claims that Carrasco could be allowed to leave for a much cheaper figure closer to €47m.

Were Carrasco to join Arsenal, and the situation all hinges on loose 'ifs' and 'buts' for the moment, it could be that he is considered a long-term replacement for Alexis Sanchez.

The pair have similar qualities and Sanchez's future at the club will continue to remain up in the air for as long as he hasn't signed a contract to extend his terms beyond 2018. The Chilean was most recently linked with Paris Saint-Germain, with Juventus also admirers.
