Arsenal boss Wenger disagrees with Champions League system

Published on: 07 December 2017

Arsene Wenger does not believe sides that drop out of the Champions League should be allowed a route into the Europa League.

The current rule allows a team that finishes third in its Champions League group to enter the Europa League in the new year.

"That's always been the case, and I was against it. We voted many times in Geneva for that and you have to respect that, it's what you call democracy. The majority voted for the Champions League teams to go back to the Europa League and [in] many, many years, they won it," he said.

Some may say that Wenger wants to keep better sides out of the competition, but he would argue his views on the matter have always been consistent.

The likes of Celtic, Atletico Madrid, Sporting, Napoli, Dortmund, Leipzig and the Moscow clubs CSKA and Spartak will be joining the Europa League, after finishing third in their respective Champions League groups.

Arsenal are set to progress in the Europa League as group winners, regardless of its result against BATE Borisov on Thursday at the Emirates.
