Arsenal Legend Believes Arsene Wenger's Side Are Too 'Mentally Weak' to Win Anything This Year

Arsenal are likely tofinish the season empty-handed, according to their former striker Alan Smith.

The now pundit Smith believes it a psychological barrier that prevents Arsenal from reaching the very top and have prevented his former club fromsucceeding in Europe and the Premier League over the last 12 years.

Speaking toSky Sports, the former England strikersaid:"There's never going to be a full-blown crisis at Arsenal because they've got too many players to win games and stay at a level, as in top four. But it's going that extra step.

"We were hoping this year that they can go that extra step, but it's that mental approach, that psychological barrier that prevents them from doing that."

After Arsenal's 2-2 draw with PSG on Tuesday, the North Londoner's chances of topping their group is now out of their hands. They now rely on other results going their way to stand any chance of finishing at the top.

Smith added:"Things aren't going to be any better in the Champions League this season, they're not going to win it, and I don't think they're going to win the league, so they're in a very similar position to what they have been in recent seasons.

"Arsenal have got history of finishing second and suffering - It's not a disaster to finish second to PSG, I think we've got to get that right, because PSG are a very good side and they showed that at the Emirates."

Arsenal will need some luck to win Group A now.

Arsenal legend Smith has questioned the mentality of the players when it comes to facing up against the big sides.

Apart from a 3-0 demolition of Chelsea Arsenal have lost against Liverpool and have failed to pick up all three points against Manchester United and rivals Tottenham.

They're not in the best of form, the Manchester United performance was shockingly poor in many ways." Added Smith.

"They didn't turn up. Why? Wenger said afterwards: 'Have my players got a mental block about playing at Old Trafford?'

"I mean if the manager is thinking that then you have got problems. There is something still missing."

Smith doesn't see Arsenal's form changing anytime soon and believes Arsene Wenger has a challenge on his hands if he wantsto turn things around anytime soon.

Arsenal will be hoping to pick up all three points this weekend as they are up against Bournemouth. Eddie Howe's men currently sit in 10th place in the league andA draw against Tottenham earlier in the season showed the talent the squad possesses.

However, mediocre performances from Bournemouthagainst Middlesborough and Sunderland in recent weeks have resulted inArsenalgoing into the game on Sundayas firm favourites.
