Asante Kotoko assistant coach Johnson Smith describes penalty awarded to Bechem United as 'dubious'

Asante Kotoko deputy coach, Johnson Smith beleives his side suffered a poor officiating in their defeat to Bechem United.

The Porcupine Warriors were hosted at the Nana Gyeabour Park on Sunday in the matchday 33 fixtures.

Steven Owusu shot Bechem United into the lead with just 10 minutes played.

Solomon Sarfo Taylor however capitalized on a goalkeeping error to pull the level for Kotoko in the 34th minute.

However, five minutes later, Bechem United were awarded a penalty which Steven Owusu made no mistake in sending Kotoko goalkeeper, Razak Abalora the wrong way to put the game at 2-1.

The defeat to the Reds ended their title chase.

“It’s all due to the officiating because the dubious penalty he had for Bechem people dampened our spirit, that’s why," Smith told the press after the game.

“The team we presented was a very good team, because of the injuries even Keyeke is injured but he was forced to play.

“But due to the referees officiating, that brings all the dampening of the spirit,” he added.

Asante Kotoko will finish second at the end of the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League season as they trail rivals, Hearts of Oak by four points on 57.

Asante Kotoko will host Elmina at the Len Clay Stadium in their final match of the season in the matchday 34 games on Sunday.
