Ashgold sure to stop WAFA — Akonnor

Coach Charles Kwabla Akonnor is upbeat about AshantiGold’s chances against visiting league leaders, WAFA, at the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium on Sunday.

He, however, admitted that the match would not be easy for his side, considering the level of opposition.

“Our match against WAFA on Sunday is a tough one because we will be playing against a side with quality players who have been playing as a team with much confidence. But our players have recognised how important this match is, and considering our recent chain of victories, including that against Accra Hearts of Oak, Ashgold are adequately motivated to deliver on Sunday,” assured Coach Akonnor in an interview with Graphic Sports yesterday.

“That is why our supporters have to fill the stands in their numbers to offer us their unflinching support to win massively against WAFA,” he added.

For Coach Akonnor, the recent exploits of Ashgold, which saw them winning five consecutive league matches to lift them from the relegation net, had not only brought smiles to the faces of their fans but had also given them something worthwhile to identify themselves with.

“This explains why they (the supporters) have to troop to the Len Clay Stadium in their numbers to roar for the players to deliver,” he explained.

Nevertheless, Akonnor described WAFA as a good team which, besides playing on a good pitch, are also well-organised and have much confidence.

“However, our chain of victories in recent times has motivated our players so much. They consider WAFA as a tough side and that alone has been the motivation for them to prepare very well, so there will be a tough match on Sunday but in the end Ashgold will triumph,“ he stressed.

Coach Akonnor noted that the Miners’ current position on the league table was a bit safe, but insisted that they still needed to continue fighting hard to win more matches to increase their points build-up.
