Aston Villa New Boy Richie De Laet Faces a Year on the Sidelines With Knee Problem

Aston Villa's latest acquisition Richie De Laet has announced that he will miss the rest of the season after breaking the news on hisTwitterpage.

The defender came off during the midweek 1-1 with Brentfordand may now need surgery on a knee injury.


De Laet only signed at Villa Park last month from Leicester and Wednesday's stalemate was just his third start for his new club.


Speaking on his twitter De Laet said: "Absolutely gutted that I'm gonna miss this season but I'm sure the boys will turn it around and get us up there."


Manager Roberto Di Matteo spoke to theBirmingham Mail and said: "'Unfortunately Ritchie De Laet has sustained a serious injury, it's looking today that he will need surgery so he will be out for a while.


"I feel very sorry for the boy. He was so happy to come here, to join us.He's had a really positive impact within the group as well and has shown some good performances.He's a really likeable player to have around and has a great work ethic."


Last term, De Laet managed to secure both Premier League and Championship winners medals. He made 12 appearances for the Foxes early in the campaign before being loaned out to Middlesbrough where he helpedthem secure automatic promotion to the top flight.


His new side have struggled to adapt to life in England's second tier and find themselves in 17th place with just the one win from seven games. They've spent in excess of £40m to try and return to the Premier League but are struggling thus far.
