Atletico Madrid 3-2 Celta Vigo: Griezmann Winner Clinches Stunning Comeback Win for Atleti

Published on: 12 February 2017

Antoine Griezmann scored an 88th minute winner as Atletico Madrid twice came from behind to beat Celta Vigo 3-2 in a thrilling Sunday evening clash.

John Guidetti looked to have given Celta a win that would've taken them up to eighth when he slotted past Miguel Angel Moya in the 78th minute, only for Yannick Carrasco and Griezmann to strike in the final five minutes to send Atletico back into the top four in La Liga.

Celta Vigo took the lead in the fifth minute through Gustavo Cabral, who pounced first to head home after Moya's attempt to punch the ball away from a corner failed horribly.

However, Celta's lead lasted only six minutes, when Fernando Torres equalised with a spectacular overhead kick in the eleventh minute.

Receiving the ball on the edge of the box with his back to goal, Torres' first touch flicked up awkwardly in front of him, what happened next was simply outrageous. Before the ball could bounce a second time, Torres fell back and unleashed a right-foot shot that lobbed Sergio Alvarez and landed in the left-hand corner of the net.

Torres soon turned from hero to zero however, when in the thirtieth minute, he smashed a penalty against the crossbar after Yannick Carrasco was adjudged to have been brought down by Celta centre-back Facundo Roncaglia.

Torres' miss looked to be proving costly with the game heading into the 86th minute, before Carrasco made it 2-2 with a stunning volley. After an Atletico corner was cleared by the Celta Vigo defence, Carrasco waited on the edge on the box for the ball to drop. When the ball did eventually fall to him, he unleashed a bullet right-foot volley that landed in the left corner of the net.

Atletico were now buoyed and went in search of the winner, which came two minutes later. Substitute Kevin Gameiro headed down to Griezmann who tapped home on the volley with his right foot to put his side in front for the first time and send the fans inside the Vicente Calderon wild.

It should've been four goals for Atletico with seconds remaining, but Gameiro somehow managed to only hit the crossbar when presented with a golden chance yards in front of goal.

However, Atletico managed to hold on for a vital victory that keeps them within touching distance at the top of La Liga.
