Head of the Nigeria Football Federation Technical Department, Austin Eguavoen has taken it upon himself to ensure that the Super Eagles qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana held Nigeria to a 1-1 draw in the final play-offs of the 2022 World Cup at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja to seal qualification to the global showpiece.

The first leg in Kumasi ended goalless and goals from Thomas Partey and William Troost-Ekong ensured the return game also ended all square to leave the tie at 1-1 on aggregate after 180 minutes, but the Black Stars claimed the ticket to Qatar 2022 on the away goals rule.

“I failed to take Nigeria to the world tournament when I had the opportunity to; I was trusted with the responsibility. For this reason, I have only been able to watch very little of the games as it makes me even sadder," Eguavoen told Brila FM after he returned to his position as the Technical Director of the side, having failed failing to qualify Nigeria to the World Cup.

“Well, as head of the Nigeria Football Federation Technical Department, I will just have to start planning now and make sure that Nigeria gets to the next FIFA World Cup in 2026.”
