CAF Champions League: Wydad Athletic determined to overturn deficit and retain title

Wydad Athletic's head coach, Sven Vandenbroek, has expressed his team's determination to secure victory in the return leg of the 2022/23 CAF Champions League final against Al Ahly.

Wydad, the defending champions, will need an outright win to retain their crown after facing a 2-1 deficit in the first leg.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference held at the Stade Mohamed V in Casablanca on Saturday, Vandenbroek emphasized the advantage of playing at home and the pressure that will be on Al Ahly.

He acknowledged that it would be a different game from the first leg and believed that the goal they scored in the previous match gave them an edge.

“Pressure will be on Ahly because we are playing at home and this will be an advantage to us. it will be a different game from the first leg,” the tactician said, speaking during Saturday’s pre-match press conference at the Stade Mohamed V in Casablanca.

“We are in a situation where we must win. Currently, the advantage is on Ahly and we know they will not want to lose that advantage easily. It will be a difficult match but the goal we scored in the first leg gives us some edge,” the tactician further noted.

While Wydad only needs a narrow 1-0 victory to secure the title, any goal conceded by the team would complicate matters.

The head coach highlighted the significance of the upcoming match, not just for him and the team, but also for Wydad fans and the Moroccan public.

“This is an important match, not only for me, the team and Wydad fans, but also the Moroccan public. A Moroccan team has never won the Champions league back to back and this is a chase for history for us,” noted the Belgian coach.
