CAF President Motsepe expresses condolences to Dr Kabungo family and Zambian Football

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has expressed its condolences to the bereaved family of Dr Joseph Kabungo and the Football Association Zambia (FAZ).

Dr Kabungo passed away on Tuesday following the disturbances that erupted aftermath of the Nigeria vs Ghana FIFA World Cup qualifier in Abuja.

The Super Eagles fans were left unhappy following their 1-1 stalemate against the Black Stars at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium.

After the game, fans staged a riot at the stadium with police firing tear gas to ensure there is claim at the stadium.

However, Dr Joseph Kabungo, a Zambian medical practitioner, is reported that have lost consciousness after he was beaten and stepped on as fans tried to make their way out of the stadium due to the stampede.

He was CAF’s designated Doping Officer for the game between Ghana and Nigeria.

Below is a  statement from CAF:

"CAF is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Zambian medical doctor and CAF Doping Officer, Dr Joseph Kabungo.

"Dr Kabungo passed on while he was on duty as a FIFA Doping Officer at theFIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ qualifier match between Nigeria and Ghana in Abuja, Nigeria on Tuesday night, 29 March 2022.

"President Dr Patrice Motsepe and the CAF family conveys deepest condolences to the family of Dr Kabungo and Football Association Zambia (FAZ)."
