The Stamford Bridge club is said to have matched Paris Saint-bid Germain's offer of roughly £51.8 million to sign the Moroccan full-back, as the Blues look to reinforce their ranks after winning the Champions League at the end of May.

Chelsea already has sufficient depth in the likes of Reece James and Cezar Azpilicueta, but with the latter moving to a more central role in defense, the club feels the need to add another wing-back.

They may, however, already have an answer inside their team.

Hudson-Odoi, an academy graduate, played in that position during Thomas Tuchel's early days at the club and may save the club more than £52 million this summer if the German manager works with him in that role.

Tuchel was thrilled with Hudson-Odoi's performance as a wing-back despite never having played the position before in his career.

"I didn’t know he hadn’t played wing-back before,” Tuchel said in January, after his first game against Wolves, which came just a day after he officially signed for Chelsea.

“Maybe it was a good thing I didn’t ask because maybe I would have doubted my decision!

“We just had one training session before the Wolves game.

“We were flying in on the same day and wondering what structure to implement to give the team a good feeling, and to have a solid block defensively but also to attack freely.

“To play with four you have to be very disciplined, and the automatisms between the line of four have to be very synchronised.

Tuchel went on to say that Hudson-Odoi's ability to attack impacted his decision to deploy him at wing-back.

"So we opted for a back five and we didn’t want to get too defensive.

“We thought about trying Reece and Callum on the right side in training.

“Callum fitted very good, and we wanted to have at least four offensive guys on the pitch from the start.

"We just let him drive and he did very good, showing all his qualities he has: the high speed, the quick recoveries, dribbles, good one-on-one."

Hudson-Odoi was impressed with how he handled the position despite never having played in it before, and he complimented Tuchel's influence.

"I’ve never played wing-back or thought about playing there,” the academy graduate said.

He added: “So getting told I was going to play there was certainly something new to me, but the manager helped me really well.

“He was explaining stuff, how to play that position, the things to do going forward and coming back.

“I watched some clips with him as well before the game to understand the positioning a bit so it helped me a lot and it was good to play there.

Hudson-Odoi signed a long-term contract that lasts until 2024 last year after been heavily linked to a move to Bayern Munich.
