Cambridge boss Derry reveals Crystal Palace duo trials

Cambridge United boss Shaun Derry has revealed they've taken two Crystal Palace players on trial.

A Palace favourite as a player, Derry maintains a close relationship with the club and allowed two members of their under-23 squad to train with Cambridge, believing it would benefit the youngsters in the long run - even if there was no offer on the table from the League Two outfit.

"For us, not just at Cambridge but for the majority of League One and League Two clubs, we have lads on trial," Derry told talkSPORT.

"There are a lot of lads who come through the door because you never know.

"There are certain ones who have come out of contract and become available to sign on non-contract terms or we might look at players in the middle of the season for potentially next season, but we give them that opportunity to come and see us.

"So as much as we're looking at them, we want them to come and have a look at us.

"That's what we say to Premier League and Championship clubs - bring your players.

"Because of my relationship with Crystal Palace, we invited two of their under-23s just to come training.

"There was nothing at the end of it. We weren't promising them a loan, we just wanted those under-23s to see what it looked like outside the bubble of a Premier League environment.

"They went back to their under-23 group and they understood what it was like to be a League One, League Two footballer and the facilities that you have to work with."
