Cameroon Diffuse Club vs Country Row After Premier League Duo Left Out of Cup of Nations Squad

Published on: 03 January 2017

Liverpool and West Bromwich Albion's club vs country row with Cameroon has come to an end after the national side opted not to include Joel Matip and Allan Nyom in their Africa Cup of Nations squad.

The Reds and Baggies had been concerned that Cameroon were set to call the pair up for the tournament, and therefore be without key defensive personnel for up to a month.

However, the BBC's John Bennett took to his Twitter account to reveal the Indomitable Lions had not named Matip or Nyom in their 23-man party for the Cup of Nations - a move that has brought any potential verbal battle to end before it had even begun.

Good news for #LFC & #WBA. Joel Matip & Allan Nyom NOT named in the 23 man Cameroon squad. Club v country row defused. #AFCON2017

Liverpool centre half Matip had been dead set against taking his place in Cameroon's squad after he had fallen out with members of the national side's coaching staff, with West Brom full-back Nyom decided against answering the call after becoming concerned that he would lose his regular starting position in Tony Pulis' side if he left the Hawthorns to take part in the international competition.

Both West Brom and Liverpool had been warned about facing possible sanctions should they prevent Nyom and Matip from playing for Cameroon, but those fears have now been put aside and the pair will remain in England to compete in the Premier League with their respective sides.
