Carlo Ancelotti Points to Second-Half Tactical Switch as Reason for Bayern Munich's Comeback Win

Published on: 01 November 2016

Bayern Munich coach Carlo Ancelotti pointed to a tactical shift in the second-half as a key factor forhis team coming from behind to beat PSV Eindhoven and secure progress to the Champions League knockout rounds with two group games to spare.

Santiago Arias had opened the scoring for PSV in Eindhoven, with Robert Lewandowksi equalising from the penalty spot before half-time. But Bayern had to wait until the 73rd minute before Lewandowski grabbed the winner from close range.

"It was tough at the start but we slowly got into the game and just about managed to win in the end," Ancelotti said as he reflected to FCBayern.de after the final whistle.

"It was important to control their counter-attacks and not to lose confidence after going 1-0 down. We played quicker after the break and created more chances," the Italian added.

In the end, the addition of two wingers gave Bayern the edge, with Douglas Costa playing a key part in the winning goal.

"Bringing on (Kingsley) Coman and Costa I tried to change the system to send in more crosses," Ancelotti explained. "It was good. We are through to the last 16, which is important. We now have two games to win the group."

Bayern were beaten by Atletico Madrid on match day two, but Tuesday night's win moved the German champions eight points clear of both PSV and Rostov with only six points left to play for.

The reverse fixture with Atletico at the Allianz Arena is likely to determine who takes top spot in the final standings and who'll beamong the top seeds in the draw for the last 16.
