Chelsea and Oxford United Entertain in the Longest Penalty Shoot-Out in British History

Chelsea and Oxford United entertained us all when they took part in what turned out to be the longest ever penalty shoot-out in the history of English football in the EFL Checkertrade Trophy on Tuesday night.

WithESPNreporting, both teams shared a total of 34 penalties and ex-Rotherham United striker Wes Thomas missing the decisive penalty, with Chelsea winning 13-12 and Thomas missing his second penalty of the shoot-out.

Chelsea keeper Bradley Collins made four penalty stops on the night also missed the target on an eventful evening. First team midfielder Marco Van Ginkel also missed from the spot along with Ola Aina and Josh Grant who had their efforts saved.

In 2014 Derby County and Carlisle United had involved 32 penalties in a shoot-out. Chelsea's Under-23's are now eligible to play in the competition after the revamp which saw the instant cup formular go to group matches, then a knockout style tournament similar to an international competition like the Euros or the World Cup.

Premier League Under-23 sides like: Everton, Middlesbrough, Stoke and West Ham have all failed to progress to the next stage. The revamped system seems to be not working its way into the fans hearts as 16 of the 24 games drew an attendance less than 1,000 and only Chelsea and Luton managed to gather a crown over 1,500 into their ground.
