Chelsea Boss Calls on Blues & West Ham Fans to Behave Ahead of Tantalising London Derby

Published on: 05 March 2017

Antonio Conte has called on Chelsea and West Ham supporters to behave themselves ahead of Monday night's clash after their last meeting was marred by fighting in the stands.

Blues and Hammers fans squared off against one another back in October as the two sides met in an EFL Cup match at the London Stadium, and officials are concerned that similar incidents could occur when the two London clubs lock horns once more.

Conte, though, told reporters that he expected both sets of supporters to be on their best behaviour and urged the punters to find "the right atmosphere" to enjoy what could prove to be a decent spectacle.

He told the Daily Mail: "Last time wasn't good. I hope in this game our fans, the West Ham fans, enjoy totally the game and find the right atmosphere.

"In England, it's very strange for me to talk about this. Usually in every game you find the right atmosphere.

"The last game against West Ham, there was an exception. But I hope, this time, to find a good atmosphere in the stadium. I think the players, the club, the country, deserve this."

Police made seven arrests as violence flared during the 2-1 victory for West Ham earlier in the campaign, and new security measures have been put in place at West Ham's ground since then to keep opposition fans separate to prevent further clashes from taking place.

Meanwhile, Conte admitted that he and his Chelsea stars were desperate to return to the bountiful land that is the Champions League.

The Londoners currently sit seven points clear of second-placed Tottenham Hotspur, and a win over West Ham would extend their lead to 10 points again as the 2016/17 season enters its home stretch.

Chelsea are on course to end their 12-month wait to dine at UEFA's lucrative top table again following their terrible title defence last term, and Conte stated that he harboured ambitions of watching Champions League games in the flesh from the sidelines of Stamford Bridge and beyond.

He added: "The Champions League must be our house. For me and my players, the Champions League must be an appointment every year.

"It is a great competition for every single player, club and manager, and we want to stay there and try to fight to win it.

"This was our target. We started our season trying to fight until the end to win the title, and to try to fight until the end to be in the right position to go into next season's Champions League.

"For sure, it wasn't easy to start the season and know that six strong teams fight for the title and the Champions League.

"I watched the Manchester City game against Monaco live, because I wanted to breathe it in, the right atmosphere, and feel this type of game. I saw a great game. To see eight goals is not simple, and not usual to find this. In the future, also, I hope to sit and watch more games live."
