Chelsea defender Aniek Nouwen has ruptured an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) while on duty with the Netherlands Under-23 team.

The 24-year-old has returned to Chelsea to begin her rehabilitation, the club announced.

Nouwen joined the Blues from PSV Eindhoven in 2021 and spent the second half of the 2022-23 campaign on loan at AC Milan.

She has made one appearance off the bench so far this season for Chelsea.

The recovery time for such a serious knee injury can be eight to 10 months, with Nouwen on contract with Chelsea until 2025.

She has made 43 appearances for the Netherlands senior team, including two at this year's World Cup.
