Chelsea vs Tottenham Hotspur Preview: History, Key Battles, Team News and More

Published on: 25 November 2016

This weekend's London derby will be pivotal for both teams, as the league leaders host the only unbeaten side left in the country.

Chelsea are flying at the moment. Six straight wins have seen the Blues storm to the top of the Premier League and the change to a 3-4-3 system is paying dividends for Antonio Conte's men. With no goals conceded in their six-match winning run, Chelsea will be confident of maintaining their impressive form and will be keen to make a statementto their title rivals.

Tottenham, on the other hand, must pick themselves up after a 2-1 defeat to Monaco last Tuesday meant they were eliminated from the Champions League. Spurs have struggled for consistency this season and whilst they remain unbeaten in the league, they have already chalked up six draws and currently find themselves out of the top four.

Any History

Whilst many will remember Spurs' fabulous 5-3 win over Chelsea back in 2014, last season's corresponding fixture between these two was arguably the best match of the whole campaign.

Tottenham took a crucial two goal lead into the break thanks to strikes from Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.With Spurs needing to win to remain in the title race, they crumbled in the second half, as Gary Cahill halved the deficit before a fabulous Eden Hazard strike levelled the scores.

The draw, which helped seal Leicester's famous title triumph, will also be remembered for the ill feeling between the teams, as the visitors broke a Premier League record by racking up nine yellow cards.

Key Battles

Eden Hazard vs Kyle Walker

One of the reasons why Chelsea have been so good recently is the form of Eden Hazard. The Belgian appears to be back to his best and will once gain be crucial to his team's chances of winning.

Spurs right-back Kyle Walker will at least be fresh for what is likely to be a long 90 minutes at Stamford Bridge, having sat out his team's Champions League defeat to Monaco last Tuesday.

Chelsea back three vs Harry Kane

Having not conceded a goal for over 500 minutes, this Chelsea back three will be tough to breach for a Tottenham side who have struggled for goals this season. Thankfully, Harry Kane is fully fit again and is in good form, having scored four goals in the three matches since his return.

If Spurs are to have any chance on Saturday, then they will need their hitman to find a way past this stubborn Chelsea backline.

Team News

Chelsea have been dealt a blow after news has emergedthatcaptain John Terry has been ruled out for several weekswith a knee problem. Fellow centre-back Kurt Zouma, is also unlikely to be availabledespite returning to full fitness. The Blues are unchanged in their last five matches, so are likely to name the same starting XI this weekend.

Tottenham will be without defensive duo Toby Alderweireld and Ben Davies, as both have failed to shake off their respective injury problems.Davies' loss will be of particular concern for Mauricio Pochettino, who will also will be without the services of Danny Rose, suspended for this weekend's match.

Erik Lamela is also unlikely to be available, as he continues to struggle with a hip injury that has now kept sidelinedfor over a month.

Potential Chelsea lineup: Courtois; Azpilicueta, Luiz, Cahill; Moses, Kante, Matic, Alonso; Pedro, Costa, Hazard

Potential Tottenham lineup: Lloris; Dier, Wimmer, Vertonghen; Walker, Wanyama, Dembele, Trippier; Alli, Kane, Son

The Blues on the other hand, are looking excellent and will be desperate to make a statement to their title rivals. With Hazard and Diego Costa back to their best, they could cause a slightly depleted Spurs defence all sorts of issues and will definitely start the match as favourites.
