CK Akonnor recommended Patrick Greveraars and not GFA ExCO - Dr Randy Abbey insists

Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association [GFA], Dr Randy Abbey has dismissed reports that the hierarchy of the country's football governing body recommended and appointed Patrick Greveraars as the second assistant coach for the Black Stars.

Patrick Greveraars who is a Dutch trainer has named as the second assistant coach for the senior national team, the Black Stars.

In the statement of the FA issued on Monday, it was categorically said CK Akonnor's request for a second assistant coach has been approved by the ExCO.

The statement by the FA was criticized by the public with many citing that Greveraars has been imposed on Akonnor without his consultation.

But according to Mr Abbey, the hierarchy of the Ghana FA never had an input in the appointment of Patrick Greveraars but rather Akonnor recommended for his appointment.

“CK Akonnor recommended three assistant coaches and the ExCO zeroed into one which was Patrick Greveraars," he told Kumasi based Pure FM.

“He recommended David Duncan who is now his assistant and the ExCO also recommended George Boateng and he accepted it and we started engaging him but along the line, it fell through because he was also weighing up on an appointment in the UK.

"CK Akonnor recommended three expatriate coaches and Greveraars was appointed. The recommendation was done by CK Akonnor and the FA had no hands in the this appointment.

“I have been with CK Akonnor and he told me he has a zoom meeting with Patrick Greveraars prior to his appointment and this was six weeks ago.

“All the recommendations came from Akonnor and the ExCO never had an input on this appointment and that was why we had to kill this mischief that the Ghana FA and ExCO never recommended Patrick Greveraars but CK Akonnor himself," he added.

Patrick Greveraars has already started his job as the second deputy coach of the national team.

He teamed up with the technical team of the Black Stars on Tuesday at the Cape Coast Stadium ahead of the two friendlies against Ivory Coast and Morocco scheduled this month.

The 45-year old previously worked with PSV Eindhoven, FC Porto, Vitesse Arnhem, Feyenoord Rotterdam, Anorthosis Famagusta and Al Shabab Dubai.
