Southampton manager Claude Puel praised his side's performance after they moved into the top half of the table after they beat Everton 1-0 on Sunday.

A goal inside the first minute of the game from Charlie Austin was enough to give the Saints a first win in five Premier League games.

Following a disappointing performance against Sparta Prague in the Europa League on Thursday, Puel was happy to get back to winning ways.

Puel told theSouthamptonwebsite, "It was important because we like points in the Premier League and it was important to take three points today.

"And it was important for the solidarity and the character. It was a good attitude to give a good answer for all the squad and I think the three points were very important.

"It was important to see my players playing football with a good spirit and quality, they gave all the possibilities to keep this result at the end with a lot of players and I took pleasure from this today and I think the fans also were fantastic with this display and this spirit.

Puel gave special credit to teenager Josh Sims who was handed his full debut against Everton. Sims set up the goal that gave Southampton the win and played well before he left to a standing ovation from the St Mary's crowd.

Puel joked to theSouthamptonwebsite by saying, "For his first game in the Premier League, I think it was ok.He has made a good progress since the beginning of the season. I think it was important to give him an opportunity. All the games are important and if we just consider this, we don't start young players."
