Different challenge for Spalletti

Published on: 18 July 2018

Inter Milan coach Luciano Spalletti says he is taking a different approach to his second season as the club's manager.

The 59-year-old took charge of the Nerazzurri last summer and was tasked with reinvigorating the team following a period in the doldrums.

A brilliant start was followed by an indifferent winter but Inter recovered in time to finish the campaign in four, thus qualifying for their maiden Champions League campaign since the 2011-12 season.

More transfer activity is expected at the Giuseppe Meazza as Spalletti and the board aim to add the required depth to push on for a potential title charge.

We have to move forward and prepare for a different season.

A first Scudetto since 2009-10 is priced at 7/1, while Inter are 50/1 to claim a fourth European Cup.

Radja Nainggolan and Lautaro Martinez have both been signed and the club have also pulled off coups by bringing in Kwadro Asamoah and Stefan de Vrij on free transfers.

Spalletti will spend the summer working them into his side and will run the rule over all those available to him during the remainder of pre-season.

After improving the team during his first year in charge, the former Roma and Zenit St Petersburg boss says he is adapting his approach to ensure the Nerazzurri can deal with the demands of both domestic and European football.

"The goal is to improve with the insertion of the new players and to consolidate what we did last year," Spalletti told SportMediaset.

"We have to move forward and prepare for a different season than this team and club have had in recent years."
